Google Analytics

Mircea Vutcovici made me aware of yet another Google service: Google Analytics. It’s great to be able to infer so much more out of the web log of your website. GA is a huge leap from old counters and shy stats services, yet another example of innovation that Google has made a career out of. They truly rock.

After releasing my Java virus to major anti-virus companies, I tracked the usage of my website and was able to pinpoint at least one visit from an anti-virus vendor – Kaspersky. Apparently, visitors from Santa Monica, CA and Switzerland, or Sofia were also interested in the virus. Probably more anti-virus vendors.

As a matter of fact, since enabling GA and simultaneously releasing information on my Java virus to the AV community, my visitor geolocation pattern came pretty colored. Here’s an idea.

I won’t brag that I’ve had visits from Dublin, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Bucharest, Cambridge, Santa Monica, Zurich, Miami or Sofia. I’ll just ponder on the fact that the only areas absent are South America, Africa and, well, Japan. I would have appreciated the Tokyo-New York-Paris triad though. The map shows that visits accumulated around Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where I spent a serious part of my life and have left behind a bunch of great people, and Valhalla, NY, my current workplace. Interestengly enough, it confirms most visits were a result of direct advertising rather than through referring sites or search engines.

There is one more loaf of stats that I find interesting, the network location for all visits. Here is the unabridged list.

1. zedak
2. romania data systems
